Planet Name Help
« on: July 27, 2010, 03:38:40 AM »
So, making up a world, and it needs a name. I'm not sure what I want to go with at the moment, but I'll give you a base of what the planet is like, and you tell me which you feel is the most fitting. You're welcome to give other ideas as well, if you have any.

-- Planet reminiscent of Earth, several thousand years ago [you know. Lush, no humans. LOL]
-- The dominant species of the planet are/were the Dragons. They're pretty big, about 45 foot long when stretched from nose to tail tip, 35-40 foot when standing relaxed, and about 10 foot at the shoulder, 15 or so from the top of the head, to the ground, not stretched.
-- Because of their size, they need big food, and as such the average animal on the planet is pretty mammoth, the size being between 20 and 30 foot in height, depending on the species.

A "small" animal would be considered maybe the size of an elephant?

And then... Human's colonize. Ohnoes.

The names I've got thus far are pretty lame, but here's the list:

Parallel Earth, Resources Negligible -- PERN -- I'm using Anne McCaffrey's acronym to name the planet.

List

NAMEMEANING
"Onles"Oxygen - Non-Lethal, Environment Stable
"Eres"Earth Replica, Environment Sound
"Peres"Planet Earth Replica, Environment Sound
"Ontes"Oxygen - Non-Toxic, Environment Stable
"Erent"Earth Replica, Environment Non-Toxic
"Esernt"Environment Sound, Earth Replica  Non-Toxic
NAMEMEANING

If you come up with something better, then please, share it ><
Some people just like to watch the world burn

Did I mention that I finally have a name for the Ribald Fantasy world...?

I took the 3 Alf names for the 3 worlds--

Aosgaard - "heaven"

Midgaard - "earth"

Diisgaard - "hell"

...and combined them:

Aomidiis.

That being said-- we humans have been naming planets already in other star systems...

Name of star, number of planet out from star... Rigel 7, Ceti Alpha 6, etc. Following that model-- there would be two designations-- the "interstellar" name [what is on the star charts to navigate to it], and the "local" name [what the natives call it]. Please note that humans have a tendency to name things after the things they left behind-- "New England", "New York", "New Orleans", as well as just taking the old name outright.
JAFFA: I got the same as Frost... Should I be worried?
ASHE: Probably not, since in my time here I've heard like.. Three different women refer to Frost as God."

I think you might have mentioned it, actually... Maybe..? I know you've told me the three world names before.

Oh, I know. Which is why I want a name made up for the humans to call the planet, and why I wanted it to be something like "Yo, this planet is human-life-friendly" acronym. The planet would have been discovered a couple hundred years before people actually colonize on it. I haven't decided why the dragons didn't make themselves known when the planet was explored; perhaps they found the little humans entertaining. Which is likely, since they also enjoy creating stampedes that manage to destroy encampments and stuff. Sometimes, the most basic things are the most entertaining; Dragons are, for the record, incredibly intelligent.

That said, on this planet, there are Three languages; Draconic, Common and Blooded.

Blooded is the twin-speak type of language that is individually unique between Blooded partners -- A dragon and a human that blood one another to form a life long bonding; to breech the language difficulties, it is neither Common nor Draconic, and because it's individually unique, it means that neither can bespeak another dragon/human and have them understand; on top of that, Blooded is a mind-to-mind language.

Learned humans are capable of understanding everything a dragon says; learned dragons are capable of understanding everything a human says. Neither are actually capable of speaking more than a few words in the other's language, because of jaw structures and sounds, but once both understand the other's language, then that is a mute point, really, but it means that almost everything on the planet has a Common name, and a Draconic name. Including those that are Blooded.

I've only been working on these guys for a couple of days now, but I've got a pretty good grip on how I want them to work. I'm actually rather proud of myself, though to be fair, they're creating themselves --- Kind of like my Centaur race did. Heh.

Dan, I really, really like that name.  An excellent amalgam.

Lizzie, I love the language patterns for your chars, especially the blooded.  For the planetary name, I like Ontes.  I don't like the "earth replica" parts of the others very much, but I like the meaning of Ontes.
We're in training until we're dead.

Yeah, I like Ontes myself. The "Non-Toxic" was Millie's input, since she said "Non-lethal" didn't sound right. =)

See, I like Peres... just because it SOUNDS like a name for a moon or a planet, never mind the amalgam.

Unfortunately, it makes me think of Perez Hilton, so I'm just turned off by association.

Or saying Paris, but lazily (is that a word?). if this were ever published and started making money, Perez Hilton is the kind of douchebag who would try and get some of that money, if the planet was named Peres.
